Crystal Marquez is a student at DePaul University where she is the Global Brigades Co-Program Director. Read on to find out more about Crystal, why she's joining MCC2014, and how you can join the movement.
This past year the Global Water Brigade at DePaul University broke ground on implementing a fresh water system in El Ojochal, a small and impoverished community in Southern Honduras. They were able to begin work on the project, dig trenches, and even lay the pipes that would carry the fresh water into the homes of El Ojochal residents for the first time.. Crystal says it was a humbling experience not only to learn more about the community but also about herself.
On why she wants to join MCC2014: "In the winter quarter of my freshman year I embarked on my first global service trip. This was my first time ever even traveling outside of the US and as nervous as I was it was in service of something that I love. I had already done service within my own community and I felt it was time to give to a community in need of the help even more than mine. This is one of the primary reasons I would love to attend MCC2014. I want to learn about other people's experiences and the ways in which they have helped others so that I may continue to do the same. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime to gain insight on different perspectives especially before I embark on my second brigade to Honduras in December. I feel that it will allow me to enter into the experience with a new perspective and allow me to gain even more from it. I would attend MCC2014 with an open mind as I do all things. I can offer insight into issues that are currently going on in Honduras specifically the one my brigade seeks to combat; the limited access to fresh water. I can provide ideas on methods of sustainability for various projects. I would love to connect and share my experiences with students that share a similar passion for bettering the world we live in."
